Visual Arts Philosophy
My main emphasis as an educator is to push my students to heights they never thought were possible, to set and achieve goals they always dreamt were unreachable, and to provide a positive, enjoyable, safe environment. I do not intend to concentrate on one subject, but apply this philosophy to all subjects found in education. The recent curriculum places a heavy emphasis on the the core subjects, and as time and energy are placed on developing a strong curriculum on ELA, math, history and science skills, time is taken from visual and performing arts. This in turn limits the student’s opportunities to express themselves through different forms of art. Moreover, art provides students with an opportunity to discover new talents, while increasing the students’ creative thinking abilities and physical well-being. My goals are simple, to provide students with the necessary technical skills and knowledge of materials. Students will be exposed to a variety of possibilities offered by the media covered by the class, together with a skill set of techniques for achieving their aesthetic goals. My next goal is to introduce my students to the idea of visual analysis, both with regards to their own work and others. My last goal is to incorporate various art forms that represent diverse cultures, this will open the door for exposure to different life aspects, as well teach the students that we all have differences but more importantly we all have similarities. My hope is that by allowing my students to express their emotions and feelings through art. This will give the students the opportunity to view art as a coping resource as well as a calming, less intense educational concentration. |
